Amherst making money auctioning obsolete items

A local program, where obsolete city possessions are sold online, was such a success that officials want to renew it for 2011. At a meeting last night of the Amherst City Council Finance Committee, Safety Service Director Dennis Clotz said the city took in $23,042 this year from sales of out-of-date merchandise, including items the city can’t use. Clotz said the website, GovDeals.com, which is used in several states, places government-owned items up for auction with the highest bidder taking ownership. Items sold successfully this year include old police cars, trucks and bikes, according to Clotz. The committee voted unanimously to take the proposal to renew the program to the full council with the emergency clause.
