Electronic Remanufacturing Preventing Deforestation

Our smartphones seem to be capable of just about anything these days; now they are even able to turn into solar-powered listening devices to combat illegal logging and poaching. The idea, which was created by the Rainforest Connection and involves recycling surplus smartphones into solar-powered listening devices that can detect chainsaws, gunshots, and animal distress calls in real-time, was recently written about by PSFK, a progressive lifestyle publication. The purpose of the device is to detect noise from up to one kilometer away, enabling authorities to respond faster. What’s more, this repurposing initiative helps to offset the huge amounts of e-waste piling up around the world. Talk about an inspiring idea!

According to the PSFK article: “If enforced, the devices would prevent 15,000 metric-tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere, which is equal to taking 3,000 cars off the road, and each device’s area of protection is often home to over 1,000 different species of plants and animals.”

At Liquidity Services, one of our core values is supporting our clients’ sustainability initiatives; this includes the recycling, repurposing, and reuse of over 2 billion pounds of scrap material. The reuse impact goes beyond this number: we’ve seen military bunk beds turned into staircases, Navy ship anchors become city art, and old railroad cars transformed into bridges. Great repurposing ideas are everywhere and inspire us every day. We are proud to contribute to sustainability and do our part through the reverse supply chain.
